I am a working single custodial father of a wonderful 3 yr old boy named Michael. There are no words to truly express my love for him but this blog is my attempt to document our lives in hopes that he may someday have a chance to read the joys and laughter that we shared together.Along the way, I hope that I may be able to pass on some things I've learned and observed as a single parent; things about parenting, the ups and downs of single parenthood, the emotions experienced watching Michael grow from a baby to a toddler to a boy and, some day, into a man.
Birthday parties
Posted 07-23-2008 at 03:31 PM by Singleparentdad
My son will be turning 4 soon so I've been thinking about birthday parties. He attends daycare 2 days a week during the summer and they have a program where the parent can plan a party during daycare hours. I will be doing this.
I was also going to plan a more "formal" party with invites to all his school classmates and friends. I was thinking of having it at a place called LittleGyms.
But it seems his mother has also planned a party as well (at Monkey Joe's...not a big fan of Monkey Joe's because of the large variance in the age of kids who are there at any particular time. Makes me nervous seeing him bouncing around with kids who look as old as 14 or 15.).
Now I am debating whether I should have another party for Michael or just go with the 2 parties already planned.
How do other single parents handle birthdays? Do you just plan one party and both parents attend? Or does each parent have their own parties?

Hey, Singleparentdad,
"Happy Birthday to Michael!" ![]() I am not single parent. But if I can be free to say, I would like to say my opinion. I think having a memory with mom to a kid at a birthday party is important no matter what happened to both parents. However, before that, a most important thing is Michael's idea on the situation. Why don't you ask him first? He is still pretty much young. But, he can express his naive, pure thought on the situation. This is most important. Other single parents! what do you think about my opinion? |

Happy Birthday Michael!
My little one will be turning two next month (I can't believe it!), and I'll be throwing one big party with her "friends", my family, and her father's family. I wouldn't expect her dad to do anything seperate, as he isn't highly involved and only has supervised visitations. |

Thank you!
lovebaby: I think at his age, he wouldn't mind if he had a birthday party everyday! lol Actually, so many of his friends and classmates are having birthdays this month, it feels like he's been going to one everyday! Have 2 on the same day next weekend. ![]() cbdt463: An early happy birthday to Aubrey! Where does time go??? It seems like it was yesterday that I was saying "I can't believe he is already 2!" and now he's already 4! As hard as it seems being a single parent sometimes, I've learned to cherish each fleeting moment because it's once in a lifetime. |
