Arrow What's New with Being Green?

Recently, you may have heard more about being "green", or turning your home into a "green home." Going green is a new term, but the idea has been around for awhile. In the past, there was an emphasis on the 3 Rs of "green" reducing, reusing, and recycling. Lately, the idea of becoming more earth-friendly is back in the spotlight.
While going green may seem like a lifestyle change for you, it only takes a few small changes to make an impact. Everyone in your family can participate. When you take earth-friendly steps, your child is learning from you.
On April 22, 1970, the very first Earth Day was held. Earth Day began as a national day of "environmental recognition" and has grown into a global event. Each spring Earth Day aims to bring awareness to the world around us and what we can do to keep it a clean place to live. Below are some tips on teaching your child what it means to be green and what you and your family can do to become more of a green household:
  • While brushing your teeth or washing your face, don't leave the water running constantly. In addition, shorter showers use less water.
  • Use light bulbs that are energy efficient. Show your child what the label means, and, if he's old enough, let him help you switch old bulbs.
  • Have recycling bins for different types of trash such as paper, plastic, and aluminum.
  • Remind your child to shut off lights when he leaves a room.
  • Instead of driving everywhere, walk, ride a bike, or take public transportation when available.
  • When grocery shopping, look for reusable packaging items, purchase items in recyclable packaging, and avoid excess packaging.
These are just a few steps you can take to introduce your child to habits that lead to environmentally friendly living. In addition to these steps, you can introduce your child to nature in general. Provide your child with outdoor learning opportunities. Take him to a nature park, go on a hiking trail, or find other community opportunities that are available.
